How to Choose a Preschool in Mannivakkam: A 10-Point Checklist

Mannivakkam has changed quickly. What was a quiet village on the edge of South Chennai is now full of young families, and the number of preschools has grown to match. The difficulty for parents is that the signboards all promise more or less the same things — international curriculum, trained teachers, holistic development — and none of that is verifiable from the road.

Here is what is actually worth checking when you visit. Work through it at three or four campuses and the differences become obvious quickly.

1. Visit during working hours, and insist on seeing a live session

This is the single most useful thing on the list. An empty classroom tells you nothing — anyone can arrange furniture. Ten minutes watching children at work tells you almost everything: whether they are choosing activities or waiting to be told what to do, whether they return materials to the shelf unprompted, and whether the adults are guiding individuals or managing a crowd.

If a school will only show you around outside teaching hours, ask why.

2. Check whether the Montessori materials are complete — and in use

A complete Montessori programme covers eight learning areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Culture, Writing Readiness, Socio-Emotional Development, and integrated Themes. Ask directly which of the eight the school covers. Plenty of preschools own a handful of Montessori materials without running a Montessori programme.

Then look at the materials themselves. Are they at child height and within reach, or displayed high up where only an adult can get them? Materials that are genuinely in daily use look used.

3. Ask about the work cycle

In a Montessori environment, children get an uninterrupted work period — a long block in which they select their own activity and stay with it as long as it holds their attention. This is where concentration is built, and it is the structural difference between Montessori and a conventional preschool timetable where the whole group moves from activity to activity together.

Ask how long the work cycle is. If the honest answer is that there isn't one, that is useful information, not necessarily a disqualification — but you should know what you are choosing.

4. Ask how the teachers were trained, and for how long

"Trained teachers" means little on its own. Ask where each facilitator trained, how long the course was, and who certified it. A school confident in its teacher development answers this without hesitation.

5. Look at the child-to-teacher ratio

The Montessori method depends on the adult being able to observe individual children and step in at the right moment. That is arithmetically impossible past a certain group size, no matter how good the teacher is. Ask for the actual number of children per trained adult in the classroom your child would join — not the school-wide average.

6. Check the premises the way you would check a house

Washrooms, drinking water, the kitchen if there is one, the outdoor play area, and the boundary wall. Look at ventilation and natural light in the classrooms. Ask what happens if a child is unwell or injured during the day, and who makes the call to contact you.

7. Consider where the campus actually sits

Preschools fronting a busy main road deal with traffic noise in the classroom and a hazardous drop-off every morning. In our area this is a real differentiator: a campus inside a residential layout is a meaningfully calmer environment than one on a highway frontage. It is worth driving to the gate at 8:30am, not just at midday when you visit.

8. Get transport confirmed for your street, not your area

"We cover Mannivakkam" is not the same as "we stop on your road." Route coverage varies layout by layout. Ask for the specific pickup point, who accompanies the children, and what the vehicle carries by way of safety equipment.

9. Ask what the full annual cost is

Ask for the total across the year including admission fee, term fees, materials, transport, uniform and any activity charges. A single headline number rarely tells the whole story, and the gap between schools narrows or widens considerably once everything is counted.

10. Ask how you will hear about your child's progress

Daily diaries, periodic reports, and whether you can speak to the facilitator without an appointment. In the early years the quality of that communication matters more than most parents anticipate, because a two-and-a-half-year-old will not tell you much themselves.

A note on "top 5" lists

There is no official body that ranks preschools in Mannivakkam, so any website publishing a definitive top five is expressing a marketing preference, not a finding. Use the checklist above and trust what you see in the classroom.
