Preschool Admission in Chennai: Documents, Timeline and What to Ask

4 August 2026TeamKidz International Montessori

Preschool admission is the first time most parents deal with a school system, and it is unnecessarily opaque. Here is the practical version.

When to start looking

Give yourself six to eight weeks before you want your child to start. That is enough time to visit three or four campuses without rushing, think it over, and still get a place. Most preschools admit through the year rather than in a single annual window, so you are rarely locked out by a deadline — but the better-regarded campuses do fill their younger groups.

If you are targeting a June start alongside the academic year, begin visiting in March or April.

Documents you will need

  • Birth certificate — original for verification plus one photocopy. This is the one that catches people out, so check you have it early.
  • Four passport-size photographs of the child.
  • Immunisation record — the vaccination card or a consolidated record from your paediatrician.
  • Address proof of the parent or guardian — Aadhaar, passport or a utility bill.
  • Transfer certificate, only if your child is moving from another preschool.

That is genuinely the whole list at preschool level. If you are asked for substantially more, ask what it is for.

What the process involves

A typical sequence looks like this: an initial enquiry by phone or form, a campus visit, an informal interaction between your child and a facilitator, a discussion about which programme fits, and then enrolment.

The interaction step worries parents more than it should. At preschool age there is no entrance test, no syllabus to have covered, and nothing to prepare. The point is to see how your child responds to the environment and to the adults — and, frankly, for your child to get a first look at the place. There is no pass or fail. Any preschool testing a two-and-a-half-year-old for academic readiness is telling you something about its approach.

Which programme fits

Broadly: Playgroup from around 2.5 years, Nursery from 3, LKG or Montessori I from 4, UKG or Montessori II from 5, and day care alongside from around 3. Good schools place by developmental stage rather than strictly by birthday, so expect a conversation rather than a lookup.

Questions that are easy to forget

In the middle of a campus tour it is easy to come away without the practical details. Before you leave, ask:

  • What is the total annual cost, including admission fee, term fees, materials, transport, uniform and activity charges?
  • What is the refund position if we withdraw mid-term?
  • How many children per trained adult in the classroom my child would join?
  • What are the exact timings, and what are the options if I need a longer day?
  • Does transport stop on my street specifically — not just in my area?
  • Who do I contact if my child is unwell during the day, and what is the protocol?
  • How and how often will I hear about my child's progress?
  • What is the notice period and process if we need to leave?

On fees

Fee structures vary widely and are rarely comparable at a glance, because what is bundled differs from school to school. Ask every campus for the same thing — the all-in annual figure — and compare those. A school that is reluctant to give you a total is worth a second thought.

A last word

The thing most likely to make this decision well is also the simplest: visit during working hours and watch a live session. Almost everything that distinguishes a good preschool from an average one is visible in ten minutes of watching children at work, and almost none of it is visible in a brochure.

If you are comparing options across the city, our guide to Montessori schools in Chennai sets out what to verify. For campus addresses and phone numbers, see Mannivakkam, West Tambaram, Guduvanchery or Nagercoil.
